![]() German officials released the “first light” images from the eROSITA instrument Tuesday. Maitra, MPE/IKIĪstronomers are elated with the first X-ray images from a German telescope on Russia’s Spektr-RG astronomy mission, demonstrating the instrument’s ability to observe galaxies near and far as scientists seek answers to questions about dark energy. The most prominent one, SN1987A, is seen as the bright source close to the center. The more compact nebulous structures in the image are mainly supernova remnants - stellar atmospheres expelled in huge explosions at the end of a massive star’s lifetime. The diffuse emission originates from the hot gas between the stars with temperatures typically a few million degrees. This image shows our neighboring galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud, observed in a series of exposures with all seven eROSITA telescope modules taken Oct. ![]()
